1954 — Harry Truman and Marquis Who’s: The Great Debate

Marquis Who’s Who editors and former President of the United States, Harry S. Truman carry on an ongoing debate about whether he had served as the 33rd or 32nd president. President Truman claims that Marquis has repeatedly made the mistake of listing him as the 33rd President of the United States when he was, in fact the 32nd president.

Marquis Who’s Who clings to the position that Truman was the 33rd president since one president before him, Grover Cleveland Alexander, had been elected twice, non-consecutively, as the 22nd and the 24th president. After several correspondences, a compromise is met that satisfies President Truman. Marquis lists him as the 33rd president (32nd man to hold the job).
